وَلَتَجِدَنَّهُمۡ أَحۡرَصَ ٱلنَّاسِ عَلَىٰ حَيَوٰةٖ وَمِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَشۡرَكُواْۚ يَوَدُّ أَحَدُهُمۡ لَوۡ يُعَمَّرُ أَلۡفَ سَنَةٖ وَمَا هُوَ بِمُزَحۡزِحِهِۦ مِنَ ٱلۡعَذَابِ أَن يُعَمَّرَۗ وَٱللَّهُ بَصِيرُۢ بِمَا يَعۡمَلُونَ
And you will surely find them the most greedy of people for life - [even] more than those who associate others with Allah. One of them wishes that he could be granted life a thousand years, but it would not remove him in the least from the [coming] punishment that he should be granted life. And Allah is Seeing of what they do
The fact that the Israelites were not really concerned with truth is proved by their own history. It was they who had slain their own prophets, such as Zachariah and John the Baptist, the only reason for these actions being that these prophets had criticized the Israelites’ mode of living, and sought to bring them back to the divine way (Nehemiah,
9:26
). They had seen Moses perform undeniable miracles, but when he was not with them in person, having left them to spend forty days on Mount Sinai, they started worshipping the golden calf; it had only been his personal authority which had kept them under control. When the Mount was raised threateningly above their heads, they temporarily agreed to do ‘all that the Lord hath spoken’ (Exodus,
19:5
, 8,
16
, 18), but, after that, most of them returned to their disobedient ways. If they had really been seeking God, their attention would have been entirely focused on the life after death; but, in fact, they, more than all the others, were obsessed with the love of the present world.
عرب کے اہل کتاب جو قرآن کی دعوت کو ماننے کے لیے تیار نہ ہوئے، اس کی وجہ ان کا یہ احساس تھا کہ وہ پہلے سے حق پر ہیں اور حق پرستوں کی سب سے بڑی جماعت بني اسرائیل) سے وابستگی رکھتے ہیں ۔ مگر یہ دراصل گروہ پرستی تھی جس کو انھوں نے حق پرستی کے ہم معنی سمجھ رکھا تھا۔ وہ گروہی حق کو خالص حق کا مقام ديے ہوئے تھے۔ یہی وجہ ہے کہ حق جب اپنی بے آمیز صورت میں ظاہر ہوا تو وہ اس کو لینے کے لیے آگے نہ بڑھ سکے۔ اگر خالص حق ان کا مقصود ہوتا تو ان کے لیے یہ جاننا مشکل نہ ہوتا کہ قرآن کا آنا خود ان کی مقدس کتاب تورات کی پیشین گوئیوں کے مطابق ہے، اور یہ کہ قرآن کے نزول کے بعد اب قرآن ہی کتابِ حق ہے، نہ کہ ان کا اپنا گر وہی مذہب۔
ان کا معاملہ فی الواقع حق پرستی کا معاملہ نہیں۔ اس کا ثبوت ان کی اپنی تاریخ میں یہ ہے کہ انھوں نے خود اپنے گروہ کے نبیوں (مثلاً حضرت زکریاؑ، حضرت یحيیٰؑ) کو قتل کیا جنھوں نے ان کی زندگیوں پر تنقید کی، جو ’’ان کے خلاف گواہی دیتے تھے تاکہ ان کو خدا کی طرف پھرالائیں (نحمیاہ
9: 26
)۔حضرت موسیٰ ؑنے جو معجزات پیش کيے اس کے بعدان کی نبوت میں کوئی شبہ نہیں رہ گیا تھا۔ مگر کوہ طور کے چالیس روزہ قیام کے زمانہ میں جب حضرت موسیٰ ؑکا شخصی دباؤ ان کے سامنے نہ رہا تو انھوں نے بچھڑے کو معبود بنا لیا۔ ان کے سر پر پہاڑ کھڑا کردیا گیا تب بھی صرف وقتی طورپر جان بچانے کے لیے انھوں نے کہہ دیا کہ ہاں ہم نے سنا۔ مگر اس کے بعد ان کی اکثریت بدستور نافرمانی کی زندگی پر قائم رہی۔ اگر وہ سچ مچ خدا پرست ہوتے توان کی ساری توجہ خدا کی اس دنیا کی طرف لگ جاتی جو موت کے بعد آنے والی ہے۔ مگر ان کا حال یہ ہے کہ وہ سب سے زیادہ موجودہ دنیا کی محبت میں ڈوبے ہوئے ہیں۔
