وَٱتَّبَعُواْ مَا تَتۡلُواْ ٱلشَّيَٰطِينُ عَلَىٰ مُلۡكِ سُلَيۡمَٰنَۖ وَمَا كَفَرَ سُلَيۡمَٰنُ وَلَٰكِنَّ ٱلشَّيَٰطِينَ كَفَرُواْ يُعَلِّمُونَ ٱلنَّاسَ ٱلسِّحۡرَ وَمَآ أُنزِلَ عَلَى ٱلۡمَلَكَيۡنِ بِبَابِلَ هَٰرُوتَ وَمَٰرُوتَۚ وَمَا يُعَلِّمَانِ مِنۡ أَحَدٍ حَتَّىٰ يَقُولَآ إِنَّمَا نَحۡنُ فِتۡنَةٞ فَلَا تَكۡفُرۡۖ فَيَتَعَلَّمُونَ مِنۡهُمَا مَا يُفَرِّقُونَ بِهِۦ بَيۡنَ ٱلۡمَرۡءِ وَزَوۡجِهِۦۚ وَمَا هُم بِضَآرِّينَ بِهِۦ مِنۡ أَحَدٍ إِلَّا بِإِذۡنِ ٱللَّهِۚ وَيَتَعَلَّمُونَ مَا يَضُرُّهُمۡ وَلَا يَنفَعُهُمۡۚ وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمُواْ لَمَنِ ٱشۡتَرَىٰهُ مَا لَهُۥ فِي ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ مِنۡ خَلَٰقٖۚ وَلَبِئۡسَ مَا شَرَوۡاْ بِهِۦٓ أَنفُسَهُمۡۚ لَوۡ كَانُواْ يَعۡلَمُونَ
And they followed [instead] what the devils had recited during the reign of Solomon. It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Harut and Marut. But the two angels do not teach anyone unless they say, "We are a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing magic]." And [yet] they learn from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah. And the people learn what harms them and does not benefit them. But the Children of Israel certainly knew that whoever purchased the magic would not have in the Hereafter any share. And wretched is that for which they sold themselves, if they only knew
When superstition and apathy set in in the declining Jewish race, certain individuals exploited this tendency in order to make commercial gains, by providing success-seekers with magical prescriptions. To make their business flourish, these unscrupulous profiteers attributed their art to Solomon, saying that the extraordinary powers he exercised over the spirits and winds were, in fact, based on his knowledge of magic, and claimed that this knowledge had been passed on to them by the spirits. This claim to authority accounted in great measure for the rapid spread of sorcery, which soon developed into a highly popular art among the Jews. When angels came to Lot’s people, who were practising homosexuals, they came in the garb of handsome boys in order to test them. Similarly, angels were sent to the Jews in Babylon in the garb of holymen to teach them magic, at the same time making it quite clear that they were only putting the Jews to the test, this being a form of knowledge that should not be practised. But the Jews took no heed of this warning: they practised magic with great fervour and even used it for illicit ends.
آسمانی کتاب کے حامل کسی گروہ کا بگاڑ ہمیشہ صرف ایک ہوتا ہے— نجاتِ آخرت جس کا انحصار تمام تر عمل صالح پر رکھا گیا ہے، اس کا راز بے عملی میں تلاش کرلینا۔ اللہ کا کلام حقیقۃً عمل کی پکار ہے۔ مگر جب قوم پر زوال آتا ہے تو اس کے افراد مقدس کلام کے لکھ لینے یا زبان سے بول دینے کو ہر قسم کی برکتوں کا پُر اسرار نسخہ سمجھ لیتے ہيں۔ یہی وہ نفسیاتی زمین ہے جس کے اوپر سحر اور کہانت اور عملیات وجود میں آتے ہیں۔ چھو منتر جیسی چیزوں سے جنت حاصل کرنے والے دنیا کو بھی چھو منتر کے ذریعے حاصل کرنے کی کوشش میں لگ جاتے ہیں۔ بزرگوں سے عقیدت کو نجات کا ذریعہ سمجھنے والے ارواح سے تعلق قائم کرکے اپنے دنیوی مسائل حل کرنے لگتے ہیں۔ اورادوظائف کے طلسماتی اثرات پر یقین کرنے والے سیاسی چمتکار دکھا کر ملت کی تعمیر اور دین کے احیا کا منصوبہ بناتے ہیں۔
جب قوم کے افراد بے عملی اور توہم پرستی (superstition) کے راستے پر چل پڑتے ہیں تو ان کے درمیان ایسے لوگ پیدا ہوتے ہیں جن کے لیے سحر و کہانت تجارت بن جاتی ہے، اور اپنی تجارت کو فروغ دینے کے لیے مشہور قومی بزرگوں کا نام استعمال کرنے لگتے ہیں ۔ ایسا ہر زمانے میں ہوا ہے، مثلاً یہود نے اپنے زوال کے زمانے میں سحر و کہانت کو جسٹیفائی (justify)کرنے کے لیے اس کو حضرت سلیمان کی طرف منسوب کردیا۔
انھوں نے کہنا شر وع کیا کہ سلیمان کو جنوں اور ہواؤں پر جو غیر معمولی اقتدار حاصل تھا وہ سب علم سحر کی بناپر تھا اور یہ سلیمانی علم بعض جنوں کے ذریعہ ہم کو حاصل ہوگیا ہے۔ اس طرح حضرت سلیمان کی طرف منسوب ہو کر عملیات کا فن ان کے اندر بڑے پیمانے پر پھیل گیا۔اس وقت قوم یہودکی آزمائش کے لیے بابل میں دو فرشتے بھیجے گئے جو درویشوں کے بھیس میں جادو اور کہانت سے بچاؤ کا عمل سکھاتے تھے۔ تاہم وہ کہتے رہتے تھے کہ یہ تمھارا امتحان ہے، یعنی تم اس کا صحیح استعمال کرنا۔ مگر اس انتباہ کے باوجود وہ ا س فن پر ٹوٹ پڑے۔ حتی کہ انھوں نے اس کو ناجائز مقاصد میں استعمال کرنا شروع کردیا۔
