وَلَوۡ شِئۡنَا لَرَفَعۡنَٰهُ بِهَا وَلَٰكِنَّهُۥٓ أَخۡلَدَ إِلَى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَٱتَّبَعَ هَوَىٰهُۚ فَمَثَلُهُۥ كَمَثَلِ ٱلۡكَلۡبِ إِن تَحۡمِلۡ عَلَيۡهِ يَلۡهَثۡ أَوۡ تَتۡرُكۡهُ يَلۡهَثۚ ذَّـٰلِكَ مَثَلُ ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُواْ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَاۚ فَٱقۡصُصِ ٱلۡقَصَصَ لَعَلَّهُمۡ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ
And if We had willed, we could have elevated him thereby, but he adhered [instead] to the earth and followed his own desire. So his example is like that of the dog: if you chase him, he pants, or if you leave him, he [still] pants. That is the example of the people who denied Our signs. So relate the stories that perhaps they will give thought
During the period of the Prophet Muhammad there was a man of great moral and intellectual distinction called Umayyah ibn Abi as-Salt. When he came to know that there were predictions in the Holy Books of the Christians and Jews about the coming of a prophet, he felt that he himself was that prophet. Later, when he was informed about the claim to prophethood made by the Prophet Muhammad and he heard the fine discourse revealed to him, he was greatly disappointed, and became an opponent of the Prophet. The proper use of the superior qualities given by God to Umayyah ibn Abi as-Salt would have been to recognise the Prophet of God and then become his companion. But because of the blessings of God already showered on him, he formed the idea that God should have showered the blessing of prophethood on him rather than on anyone else. He saw worldly benefit in the rejection of the Prophet of God while, on the contrary, acceptance of the Prophet would have led to benefit in the Hereafter. Had he gone in the direction of acceptance, he could have made the angels his fellow travellers. But when he walked the path of jealousy and pride, there was nobody except Satan to give him company. This example is applicable to all those people who ignore the Truth or refuse to accept it on the basis of jealousy and haughtiness. A man’s becoming like this amounts to falling down from the status of humanity to the status of a dog. A dog pants on good treatment as well as on bad. This is the condition of such a man. When God blessed him, he became arrogant and when He did not bless him, he still remained arrogant. Actually, he should have been grateful and obliged to God for His blessing, and when he did not receive some blessing, he should have reconciled himself to God’s dispensation and turned back to Him. God does not openly appear to guide people, He shows His way to the people by means of signs. Those who have the ability to recognize Truth as it appears in the shape of signs and arguments, and are ready to surrender to it, are the ones who avail of guidance in this world. And for those who do not attach importance to signs and arguments, there is nothing but eternal destruction.
رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے زمانہ میں ایک شخص امیہ بن ابی الصلت تھا۔ اعلیٰ انسانی اوصاف کے ساتھ وہ حکیمانہ کلام میں بھی ممتاز درجہ رکھتا تھا۔ اس کو جب معلوم ہوا کہ عیسائیوں اور یہودیوں کی کتابوں میں ایک پیغمبر کے آنے کی پیشین گوئیاں موجود ہیں تو اس کو گمان ہوا کہ شاید وہ پیغمبر میں ہی ہوں۔ بعد کو جب اسے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے دعوائے نبوت کی خبر ملی اور اس نے آپ کا اعلیٰ کلام سنا تو اس کو سخت مایوسی ہوئی۔ وہ پیغمبر اسلام کا سخت مخالف بن گیا۔ امیہ بن ابی الصلت کو خدا نے جو اعلیٰ خصوصیات دی تھیں ان کا صحیح استعمال یہ تھا کہ وہ خدا کے پیغمبر کو پہچانے اور ان کا ساتھی بن جائے۔ مگر خدا کی نوازشوں سے ا س نے اپنے اندر یہ ذہن بنایا کہ اب خدا کو میرے سوا کسی اور پر اپنا فضل نہ کرنا چاہيے۔ پیغمبر خدا کو نہ ماننے میں اسے دنیوی فائدہ نظر آتا تھا اس کے برعکس، آپ کو ماننے میں اخروی فائدہ تھا۔ اس نے آخرت کے مقابلہ میں دنیا کو ترجیح دی۔ وہ اگر اعتراف کے رخ پر چلتا تو وہ فرشتوں کو اپنا ہم سفر بناتا۔ مگر جب وہ حسد اور گھمنڈ کے راستہ پر چل پڑا تو وہاں شیطان کے سوا کوئی اور نہ تھا جو اس کا ساتھ دے۔ یہ مثال ان تمام لوگوں پر صادق آتی ہے جو حسد اور کبر کی بنا پر سچائی کو نظر انداز کریں یا اس کو ماننے سے انکار کریں۔
کسی آدمی کا ایسا بننا اپنے آپ کو انسانیت کے مقام سے گرا کر کتے کے مقام پر پہنچا دینا ہے۔ کتا اچھے سلوک پر بھی ہانپتا ہے اور برے سلوک پر بھی۔ یہی حال ایسے آدمی کا ہے۔خدا نے جب اس کو دیا تب بھی اس نے اس سے سرکشی کی غذا لی اور نہ دیا تب بھی وہ سرکش ہی بنا رہا۔ حالاں کہ چاہیے یہ تھا کہ جب خدا نے اس کو دیا تھا تو وہ اس کا احسان مند ہوتا اور جب خدا نے نہیں دیا تو وہ خدا کی تقسیم پر راضی رہ کر اس کی طرف رجوع کرتا۔
کسی کو راستہ دکھانے کے ليے خدا خود سامنے نہیں آتا بلکہ وہ نشانیوں (دلائل) کی صورت میں اپنا راستہ لوگوں کے اوپر کھولتا ہے۔ جن لوگوں کے اندر یہ صلاحیت ہو کہ وہ دلائل اور نشانیوں کے روپ میں ظاہر ہونے والے حق کو پہچان لیں اور اپنے آپ کو اس کے حوالے کرنے پر راضی ہوجائیں وہی اس دنیا میں ہدایت یاب ہوتے ہیں۔ اور جو لوگ دلائل اور نشانیوں کو اہمیت نہ دیں ان کے ليے ابدی بربادی کے سوا اور کچھ نہیں۔
