وَزُرُوعٖ وَنَخۡلٖ طَلۡعُهَا هَضِيمٞ
And fields of crops and palm trees with softened fruit
After the ‘Ad, the other community which gained ascendance was the Thamud (
7:74
). This community inhabited the area between Khaybar and Tabuk known as Al-Hijr. This community too was blessed with great prosperity and enjoyed dominance over others. But, the members of this community likewise devoted their full attention to the attainment of material prosperity. The art of constructing large houses by carving them out of the hills was perhaps started by this community and an improved form of this is found in the Ajanta and Ellora caves in India. Unfortunately, all those who obtain worldly benefits harbour the misunderstanding that they are entitled to them and may use them as they like. But this is the greatest mistake. The fact is that these worldly things are there only for as long as the period of trial lasts. After that, everything will be snatched from them so that nothing remains. One who exceeds the limit is one who, when he acquires wealth, develops the mentality of conceit instead of gratitude to God. When power falls to his lot, he indulges in vanity instead of being modest. If he is given high office, he uses it to glorify his name and not to serve others. Such misuse of available opportunities creates disturbance in society. The leaders of the Thamud community indulged in such type of excesses and the commoners followed them. Their prophet warned (the common people) that those they considered great were themselves misguided, and asked how they could then guide others.
عاد کے بعد دوسری قوم جس کو عروج ملا وہ ثمود کی قوم تھی (الاعراف،
7:74
)۔اس قوم کی آبادیاں خیبر اور تبوک کے درمیان اس علاقہ میں تھیں جس کو الحجر کہاجاتا ہے۔ اس قوم کو بھی زبردست خوش حالی اور غلبہ حاصل ہوا۔مگر اس کے افراد کی بھی ساری توجہ دوبارہ صرف مادی ترقی کی طرف لگ گئی۔ پہاڑوں کو کاٹ کر بڑے بڑے مکان بنانے کا فن غالباً اسی قوم نے شروع کیا۔ جس کی زیادہ ترقی یافتہ صورت اجنتا اور ایلورا کے غاروں کی شکل میں پائی جاتی ہے۔
ہر شخص اور ہر گروہ جس کو دنیا کا سازوسامان ملتا ہے وہ اس غلط فہمی میں پڑ جاتا ہے کہ یہ سب اس کا حق ہے اور وہ جس طرح چاہے اسے استعمال کرے۔ مگر یہ سب سے بڑی بھول ہے۔ حقیقت یہ ہے کہ دنیا کا اسباب صرف امتحان کی مدت تک کے ليے ہے۔ اس کے بعد وہ اس طرح چھین لیا جائے گا کہ آدمی کے پاس ان میں سے کچھ بھی باقی نہ رہے گا۔
حد سے گزرنے والا (مسرف) وہ شخص ہے جس کے پاس دولت آئے تو وہ شکر کے بجائے فخر کی نفسیات میں مبتلا ہوجائے۔ وہ اقتدار پائے تو تواضع کے بجائے گھمنڈ کرنے لگے۔ اس کو عہدہ دیا جائے تو وہ اس کو خدمت کے بجائے اپنانام بلند کرنے کے ليے استعمال کرے۔ مواقع کے یہی غلط استعمالات ہیں جو معاشرہ میں بگاڑ پیدا کرتے ہیں۔ قوم ثمود کے بڑے لوگ اسی قسم کے اسراف میں مبتلا تھے۔ اور ان کے عوام ان کی پیروی کررہے تھے ۔ پیغمبر نے انھیں متنبہ کیا کہ یہ لوگ جن کو تم بڑا سمجھتے ہو وہ تو خود بے راہ ہیں پھر وہ تم کو کیسے راستہ دکھائیں گے۔
