ثُمَّ أَرۡسَلۡنَا رُسُلَنَا تَتۡرَاۖ كُلَّ مَا جَآءَ أُمَّةٗ رَّسُولُهَا كَذَّبُوهُۖ فَأَتۡبَعۡنَا بَعۡضَهُم بَعۡضٗا وَجَعَلۡنَٰهُمۡ أَحَادِيثَۚ فَبُعۡدٗا لِّقَوۡمٖ لَّا يُؤۡمِنُونَ
Then We sent Our messengers in succession. Every time there came to a nation its messenger, they denied him, so We made them follow one another [to destruction], and We made them narrations. So away with a people who do not believe
After the advent of each prophet, the succeeding generations of his community were always led astray. In order to reform them, prophets were sent to them again and again. In Adam’s generation Noah appeared. In Noah’s generation (the ‘Ad), Hud appeared as a prophet. In Hud’s generation (the Thamud), Salih appeared. But on each occasion those who had accepted the prophet of the past without question, were the very same people who were not at all prepared to accept the prophet of their own times. The reason for this is that the prophet of the past, as a result of a wealth of traditions surrounding him, ultimately becomes a symbol of national pride, or national identity. He assumes the status of a national hero. By accepting him, one’s superiority complex is satisfied. Obviously, who will refuse to accept such a prophet? But, the case of the prophet during his lifetime is just the opposite. He has neither any halo of history around him nor any traditions of greatness to enhance his persona. Accepting him amounts to accepting an invisible reality. This is why those who accepted the prophet of the past have always refused to accept the prophet of their own times. ‘So away with the people who will not believe!’ Those referred to in this injunction are people who could recognize God’s emissary only when, as a result of historical process, he had become their national hero.
پیغمبروں کے بعد ہمیشہ ان کی امتوں میں بگاڑ آتا رہا۔ ان کی اصلاح کے ليے بار بار پیغمبر بھیجے گئے — امت آدم میں حضرت نوح آئے۔ اس کے بعد امت نوح (عاد) میں حضرت ہود آئے۔ پھر امت ہود (ثمود) حضرت صالح آئے، وغیرہ۔ مگر ہر بار یہ ہوا کہ وہی لوگ جو ماضی کے پیغمبر کو بلا بحث مانے ہوئے تھے وہ حال کے پیغمبر کو کسی طرح ماننے پر تیار نہ ہوئے۔
اس کی وجہ یہ ہے کہ ماضی کا پیغمبر طویل روایات کے نتیجے میں قومی فخر کا نشان بن جاتا ہے۔ وہ قوموں کے ليے ان کی قومی تشخص کی علامت ہوتا ہے۔ وہ ان کے ليے قومی ہیرو کا درجہ اختیار کرلیتا ہے۔ اس کو مان کر آدمی کے احساس برتری کو تسکین ملتی ہے۔ ظاہر ہے کہ ایسے پیغمبر کو کون نہیں مانے گا۔
مگر حال کے پیغمبر کا معاملہ اس کے بالکل برعکس ہوتاہے۔ حال کے پیغمبر کے ساتھ اس کی تاریخ وابستہ نہیں ہوتی۔ اس کے ساتھ عظمت اور تقدس کی روایت شامل نہیں ہوتی۔ اس کو ماننا صرف ایک معنوی حقیقت کے اعتراف کے ہم معنی ہوتا ہے، نہ کہ کسی ہمالیائی عظمت سے اپنے آپ کو وابستہ کرنا۔ یہی وجہ ہے کہ ماضی کے پیغمبروں کو ماننے والے ہمیشہ حال کے پیغمبر کا انکار کرتے رہے۔
’’دور ہوں جو ایمان نہیں لاتے‘‘— اس کو لفظ بدل کر کہیں تو اس کا مطلب یہ ہوگا کہ دور ہوں وہ لوگ جو خدا کے سفیر کو خدا کے سفیر کی حیثیت سے نہیں پہچان پاتے۔ وہ خدا کے سفیر کو صرف اسی وقت پہچانتے ہیں جب کہ تاریخی عمل کے نتیجے میں وہ ان کا قومی ہیرو بن چکا ہو۔
