وَٱللَّهُ جَعَلَ لَكُم مِّمَّا خَلَقَ ظِلَٰلٗا وَجَعَلَ لَكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡجِبَالِ أَكۡنَٰنٗا وَجَعَلَ لَكُمۡ سَرَٰبِيلَ تَقِيكُمُ ٱلۡحَرَّ وَسَرَٰبِيلَ تَقِيكُم بَأۡسَكُمۡۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُتِمُّ نِعۡمَتَهُۥ عَلَيۡكُمۡ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تُسۡلِمُونَ
And Allah has made for you, from that which He has created, shadows and has made for you from the mountains, shelters and has made for you garments which protect you from the heat and garments which protect you from your [enemy in] battle. Thus does He complete His favor upon you that you might submit [to Him]
The importance of the shade of a roof or trees can be imagined when a man finds himself in a desert where there is no shade of any kind. The result of the sun’s heat being so well regulated is that an ordinary barrier gives us comfortable shade. Had the sun’s heat been more than at present, which is quite possible, our shaded dwellings would have become burning hot ovens. There being caves in hard rocks where man can make his dwellings and there being such materials in the world which, made into thin fibres provide clothes for the protection of man’s body, are very important factors for a creature like a human being, so much so that if they had not been available, there would have been no human beings and no human civilization on the earth. This realization develops two kinds of feelings in man—firstly, the feeling of obligation towards God, because He is the one who has given to man such valuable bounties and, secondly, a feeling of fear, because if God were to take away these bounties, man would have no other recourse. If such feelings awaken man’s inner self to such an extent that he spontaneously kneels down before his Lord, then this is indeed true worship (la‘allakum tuslimun).
چھت کا اور دوسری چیزوں کا سایہ کتنی اہمیت رکھتا ہے، اس کا اندازہ اس وقت ہوتا ہے جب آدمی اپنے آپ کوکسی ایسے صحرا میں پائے جہاں کسی قسم کا کوئی سایہ نہ ہو۔ سورج کی حد درجہ حسابی حرارت کا یہ نتیجہ ہے کہ ایک معمولی آڑ بھی ہمیں سایہ دے دیتي ہے۔ حالاں کہ اگر سورج کی حرارت موجودہ حرارت سے زیادہ ہوتی، جو یقینی طورپر ممکن تھی، تو ہمارے تمام سایہ دار گھر آگ کی بھٹی میں تبدیل ہوجاتے۔ پہاڑ جیسی سخت چٹانوں میں ایسے شگاف ہونا جہاں آدمی اپنی پناہ گاہیں بنا سکے۔ دنیا میں ایسی چیزیں موجود ہونا جو باریک ریشوں میں ڈھل کر آدمی کو اس کے جسم کے بچاؤ کے لیے لباس دیں۔ اس قسم کی چیزیں آدمی جیسی مخلوق کے لیے اتنی اہم ہیںکہ اگر وہ نہ ہوتیں تو زمین پر نہ انسان کا وجود ہوتا اور نہ کسی انسانی تہذیب کا۔
یہ معرفت بیک وقت آدمی کے اندر دو چیزیں پیدا کرتی ہے۔ ایک، خدا کے لیے احسان مندی کا جذبہ، کیوں کہ وہی ہے جس نے آدمی کو ایسی قیمتی نعمتیں دیں، دوسري، اندیشہ کا جذبہ، کیوںکہ خدا اگر اپنی نعمتوں کو واپس لے لے تو اس کے بعد آدمی کے پاس ان کی تلافی کی کوئی صورت نہیں۔ یہ احساسات جب آدمی کے اندرون کو اس طرح جگا دیں کہ وہ اپنے رب کے سامنے گر پڑے تو اسی کا نام عبادت ہے۔
