إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤۡمِنُونَ بِـَٔايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ لَا يَهۡدِيهِمُ ٱللَّهُ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ
Indeed, those who do not believe in the verses of Allah - Allah will not guide them, and for them is a painful punishment
In Makkah there were some non-Arab slaves. In various books of tafsir (commentary) their names have been given as Jabr, Yasar, ‘A’ish, Ya‘ish, etc. (there is some mention also of Salman al-Farsi who later became a Muslim). These slaves being either Jews or Christians were very knowledgeable about the ancient holy religions of Judaism and Christianity. From time to time they chanced to meet the Prophet Muhammad. On the basis of such meetings, the Chiefs of the Quraysh started saying, ‘The non-Arabs tell Muhammad something and he presents it to the people, declaring it to be “divine discourse.’” Why was this ridiculous statement made by them? It was due to the same common wrong approach which is found in every period all over the world; i.e. the refusal to recognize the value of one who is one’s own contemporary. The Prophet Muhammad was a contemporary personality for the Quraysh, and therefore, they failed to appreciate him. This verse shows that those who feel nothing but contempt for their contemporaries can never be truly inspired to accept the Truth. Instead of accepting the Truth, they fabricate false allegations against the messengers of the Truth; ignoring the greater facts, they seize upon irrelevant things amounting to hair-splitting in order to defame the preacher. They spend their entire lives in this way until the day of their death when they will be punished by God.
مکہ میں کچھ عجمی غلام تھے۔ ان کے نام تفسیر کی کتابوں میںحیر، یسار، عائش، یعیش وغیرہ آئے ہیں۔ اس ضمن میں سلمان فارسی کا نام بھی لیا گیا ہے جو بعد کو مسلمان ہوگئے۔ یہ غلام یا یہودی تھے یا نصرانی۔ اس بنا پر وہ قدیم آسمانی مذاہب، یہودیت اور نصرانیت کے بارے میں معلومات رکھتے تھے۔ ان میں سے کسی کی کبھی رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے ملاقات ہوجاتی تھی۔ اس طرح کی ملاقاتوں کو بنیاد بنا کر قریش کے لیڈروں نے کہا کہ ’’یہی عجمی لوگ محمد کو کچھ باتیں بتا دیتے ہیں اور وہ ان کو خدائی کلام بتا کر لوگوں کے سامنے پیش کرتے ہیں‘‘۔
یہ مضحکہ خیز بات انھوں نے کیوں کہی۔ اس کی وجہ وہی عام برائی ہے جو ہر زمانہ میں اور ہمیشہ دنیا میں پائی گئی ہے۔وہ ہے— اپنے ہم عصر کو میرٹ کی سطح پر نہ پہچاننا۔ قریش کے لیے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ایک معاصر شخصیت تھے، اس لیے وہ آپ کو پہچاننے اور آپ کی قدر کرنے میں ناکام رہے۔
اس آیت سے معلوم ہوتاہے کہ جو لوگ معاصرانہ نفسیات کے فتنہ میں مبتلا ہوں وہ کبھی حق کو قبول کرنے کی توفیق نہیں پاتے۔ وہ حق کو مان لینے کے بجائے یہ کرتے ہیں کہ حق کے علم بردار کے خلاف جھوٹی باتیں گھڑتے رہتے ہیں۔ وہ بڑی بڑی حقیقتوں کو نظر انداز کردیتے ہیں، اور چھوٹی چھوٹی باتوں کو لے کر داعی کی شخصیت کو بدنام کرتے ہیں۔ وہ اسی میں مشغول رہتے ہیں، یہاں تک کہ مرکر خدا کی پکڑ کے مستحق بن جاتے ہیں۔
