قَالَتۡ لَهُمۡ رُسُلُهُمۡ إِن نَّحۡنُ إِلَّا بَشَرٞ مِّثۡلُكُمۡ وَلَٰكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَمُنُّ عَلَىٰ مَن يَشَآءُ مِنۡ عِبَادِهِۦۖ وَمَا كَانَ لَنَآ أَن نَّأۡتِيَكُم بِسُلۡطَٰنٍ إِلَّا بِإِذۡنِ ٱللَّهِۚ وَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَلۡيَتَوَكَّلِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ
Their messengers said to them, "We are only men like you, but Allah confers favor upon whom He wills of His servants. It has never been for us to bring you evidence except by permission of Allah. And upon Allah let the believers rely
When the people rejected each contemporary prophet in turn, saying ‘You are a human being like us,’ the real reason was not that they considered it necessary for the prophet to be superhuman. The real reason was the difference they observed between previous prophets and the contemporary prophet. The fact is that the past prophets were also, in their time, just like the contemporary prophet. But subsequently their followers weaved a halo of magical stories around them, so that their personalities were given a dramatic colour which they did not initially possess. Now the communities had before them on the one hand prophets, supposedly capable of performing certain tricks and feats and, on the other, a prophet of realistic calibre. In this comparison the previous prophets became perfect examples. When communities viewed the matter by these standards, they found the contemporary prophet a lesser man than the charismatic prophets of the past. So they rejected him with contempt. The prophets told their addressees that they could only exercise patience in answer to their objections, i.e. they wanted guidance at a superhuman level, while God had given them (the prophets) the capacity to give guidance only at a human level. The prophets said, ‘Under these circumstances, what can we do except tolerate your persecution and entrust the whole matter to God?’
پیغمبروں کے مخاطبین نے جب اپنے ہم عصرپیغمبروں کو یہ کہہ کر رد کیا کہ ’’تم تو ہمارے جیسے ایک بشر ہو‘‘ تو اس کی وجہ حقیقۃً یہ نہیں تھی کہ وہ پیغمبری کے لیے غیر بشر ہونے کو ضروری سمجھتے تھے۔ اس کی وجہ دراصل وہ فرق تھا جو ان کے اپنے تصور کے مطابق ان کو پچھلے پیغمبر اور ہم عصر پیغمبر میں نظر آتا تھا۔
گزرا ہوا پیغمبر بھی اگر چہ اپنے وقت میں ویسا ہی تھا جیسا کہ ہم عصرپیغمبر۔ مگر بعد کے دور میں گزرے ہوئے پیغمبروں کے متبعین نے ان کے گرد طلسماتی قصوں کا ہالہ بنا دیا۔ بعد کے دور میں پیغمبروں کی شخصیتوں کو ایسا افسانوی رنگ دے دیاگیا جو ابتداء ً ان کے یہاں موجود نہ تھا۔ اب قوموں کے سامنے ایک طرف فرضی شعبدوں والا پیغمبر تھا، دوسری طرف حقیقی واقعات والا پیغمبر۔ اس تقابل میں پچھلا پیغمبر پیغمبری کے لیے معیاری نمونہ بن گیا۔ اور جب قوموں نے اس معیار کے اعتبار سے دیکھا تو وقت کا حقیقی پیغمبر ان کو ماضی کے افسانوی پیغمبر سے کم نظر آیا۔ چنانچہ انھوںنے اس کو حقیر سمجھ کر نظر انداز کردیا۔
پیغمبروں نے اپنے مخاطبین سے کہا کہ تمھاری ان باتوں کے جواب میں ہمارے پاس صبر کے سوا اور کچھ نہیں ہے۔ تم غیر بشریت کی سطح پر ہدایت کے طالب ہو۔ اور خدا نے ہم کو صرف بشریت کی سطح پر ہدایت دینے کی طاقت عطا کی ہے۔ ایسی حالت میں ہم اس کے سوا اور کیا کرسکتے ہیں کہ تمھاری ایذاؤں کو برداشت کریں اور اس سارے معاملہ کو خدا کے حوالے کردیں۔
