۞قَالُوٓاْ إِن يَسۡرِقۡ فَقَدۡ سَرَقَ أَخٞ لَّهُۥ مِن قَبۡلُۚ فَأَسَرَّهَا يُوسُفُ فِي نَفۡسِهِۦ وَلَمۡ يُبۡدِهَا لَهُمۡۚ قَالَ أَنتُمۡ شَرّٞ مَّكَانٗاۖ وَٱللَّهُ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا تَصِفُونَ
They said, "If he steals - a brother of his has stolen before." But Joseph kept it within himself and did not reveal it to them. He said, "You are worse in position, and Allah is most knowing of what you describe
According to commentators of the Quran, in his childhood Joseph quietly removed an idol from his grandmother’s house and broke it. This showed his antipathy for polytheism. But because it was a parallel to Benjamin’s act, his brothers gave it the colour of theft, and making this an excuse to blacken Benjamin’s name, they said, ‘A brother of his had [also] committed theft before him.’ Joseph’s brothers showed great humility to Joseph, who occupied a very high position in Egypt, addressing him as ‘O exalted one’, etc. But the Joseph of Canaan, who was in their eyes only a village boy, was being wrongly alleged to be a thief. Joseph knew very well that due to the drinking cup placed by him in Benjamin’s pack, his brother was unnecessarily being accused of being a thief. But for timely reasons, he kept quiet and allowed matters (i.e. what was going on between his brothers and the royal officers) to take their own course. When he was obliged to say something, he did not refer to Benjamin as ‘one who has stolen something belonging to us,’ but ‘the person on whom we found our property.’
مفسرین نے لکھا ہے کہ حضرت یوسف کی کسی نانی کے یہاں ایک بت تھا۔ حضرت یوسف اپنے بچپن میں اس کو چپکے سے ان کے یہاں سے اٹھا لائے اور اس کو توڑ ڈالا۔ اسی واقعہ کو بہا نہ بنا کر برادرانِ یوسف نے کہا کہ ’’اس کا بڑا بھائی بھی اس سے پہلے چوری کرچکا ہے‘‘۔ ایک واقعہ جوآپ کی غیرت توحید کو بتا رہا تھا اس کو محض ایک ظاہری مشابہت کی وجہ سے انھوں نے چوری کے خانہ میں ڈال دیا۔
برادرانِ یوسف کا حال یہ تھا کہ مصر کے تخت پر بیٹھے ہوئے یوسف کو تو وہ عزیز (حضور، سرکار) کہہ رہے تھے اور اس کے سامنے خوب تواضع دکھا رہے تھے۔ مگر کنعان کا یوسف جو ان کی نظر میں صرف ایک دیہاتی لڑکا تھا، اس کو عین اسی وقت ناحق چوری کے الزام میں ملوّث کررہے تھے۔
حضرت یوسف کو علم تھا کہ ان کے رکھے ہوئے پیالہ کی وجہ سے بن یامین خواہ مخواہ چور بن رہا ہے۔ مگر وقتی مصلحت کی بناپر وہ خاموش رہے اور واقعہ کو اپنی رفتار سے چلنے دیا جو بھائیوں اور شاہی کارندے کے درمیان ہورہا تھا۔ ایک بار جب آپ کو بولنا پڑا تو یہ نہیں کہا کہ ’’جس نے ہماری چوری کی ہے‘‘ بلکہ یہ فرمایا کہ ’’جس کے پاس ہم نے اپنا مال پایا ہے‘‘۔
