قَالَ يَٰقَوۡمِ أَرَءَيۡتُمۡ إِن كُنتُ عَلَىٰ بَيِّنَةٖ مِّن رَّبِّي وَءَاتَىٰنِي مِنۡهُ رَحۡمَةٗ فَمَن يَنصُرُنِي مِنَ ٱللَّهِ إِنۡ عَصَيۡتُهُۥۖ فَمَا تَزِيدُونَنِي غَيۡرَ تَخۡسِيرٖ
He said, "O my people, have you considered: if I should be upon clear evidence from my Lord and He has given me mercy from Himself, who would protect me from Allah if I disobeyed Him? So you would not increase me except in loss
The Prophet Salih the successor of Ad called upon his community to worship the one and only God. Indeed, this had been the aim of all the prophets in every age. But, Salih’s community did not accept his message. The reason for this was that he was talking of linking them directly to God, while they held that they were linked to their great and holy men in the name of God. Now, since Salih’s sole strength was the power of reasoning, his community was not impressed by the significance of what he had to say. The importance of the religion which Salih was urging them towards would have been clear if they had given due consideration to God’s revelation and signs. But the members of his community were willing to give due recognition only to that religion which had come down to them through the records and traditions of the leading lights of their community. The result was that the community, in spite of being overwhelmed by his arguments, were in a dilemma of doubt. Like all other prophets, as Salih grew up in his community he was recognised as one who was distinctive in personality and intelligence. It was hoped that, on growing up, he would prove to be a useful member of society. But, things took a different turn and he started criticising the religion prevalent at that time. Seeing this, his people were greatly disappointed in him. They said, ‘We were under the impression that you would be a pillar of our established religious system. On the contrary, we see that you are bent upon proving our religious system baseless.’ In every period God’s true missionaries had to face this sort of reaction on the part of their communities.
حضرت صالح نے اپنی قوم کو ایک خدا کی عبادت کی طرف بلایا۔ یہی ہر زمانہ میں تمام پیغمبروں کا مقصد تھا۔ مگر حضرت صالح کی قوم آپ کے پیغام کو قبول نہ کر سکی۔ اس کی وجہ یہ تھی کہ آپ اس کو براہِ راست خدا سے جوڑنے کی بات کرتے تھے، جب کہ قوم کا حال یہ تھا کہ وہ خدا کے نام پر صرف اپنے اعاظم واکابر سے جڑی ہوئی تھی۔
ایسے لوگوں کا حال یہ ہوتا ہے کہ وہ اپنے مخصوص مزاج کی وجہ سے کسی چیز کی اہمیت اور معنویت صرف اس وقت سمجھ پاتے ہیں جب کہ ان کے قومی بزرگوں کے قول وعمل میں اس کی تصدیق مل جائے۔ اب چونکہ حضرت صالح کے پاس صرف دلیل کا زور تھا، ان کی قوم ان کی بات کی اہمیت کو محسوس نہ کرسکی۔ حضرت صالح جس دین کی طرف بلارہے تھے اس کی اہمیت خدا کی وحی اور زمین و آسمان کی نشانیوں میں غور کرنے سے واضح ہوتی تھی۔ جب کہ ان کی قوم صرف اس دین کی اہمیت سے باخبر تھی جو اکابر قوم کے ملفوظات اور معمولات سے ثابت ہوتا ہے۔ اس کا نتیجہ یہ ہوا کہ ان کی قوم آپ کے دلائل کے مقابلہ میں لاجواب ہو کر بھی بس ایک قسم کے شبہ کی حالت میں پڑی رہی۔
حضرت صالح، دوسرے تمام پیغمبروں کی طرح، شخصیت اور ذہانت میں اپنی قوم کے ممتاز فرد تھے۔ لوگ امید رکھتے تھے کہ بڑے ہو کر وہ قوم کے ایک کار آمد فرد ثابت ہوں گے۔ مگر وہ بڑی عمر کو پہنچے تو انھوں نے قوم کے مروجہ مذہب پر تنقید شروع کردی۔ یہ دیکھ کر قوم کے لوگوں کو ان کے بارہ میں سخت مایوسی ہوئی۔ انھوںنے کہا، ہم تو یہ سمجھے ہوئے تھے کہ تم ہمارے قائم شدہ مذہبی نظام کے ایک ستون بنو گے۔ اس کے برعکس ہم یہ دیکھ رہے ہیں کہ تم ہمارے مذہبی نظام کو بے بنیادثابت کرنے پر اپنا سارا زور لگائے ہوئے ہو — یہی معاملہ ہر دور میں خدا کے سچے داعیوں کو اپنی قوم کی طرف سے پیش آیا ہے۔
